I think you're on to something here - I have seen the self-appointed Guardians of Real Literature be totally bemused by the participatory aspect of SF conventions, audience involvement with panels etc, And it is unusual, compared to the standard 'literary event' pattern of audience sitting quietly to absorb the wisdom being handed down from the platform aka selected authors simply plugging their own latest books and theories (in the most tedious cases).
